Just saying...

I've been looking at a lot of comics on the web and how they're drawn, and I've come to realise that the art isn't that important. Obviously there are some really well drawn comics out there, but there are a lot of very poorly drawn comic that make a metric shit ton of money. As an artist I think that comics should be well drawn. I read comics when I was growing up and the art in those were amazing! I read X-men, Gen13, Spawn, Spiderman, Superman... Anything that I thought had good art. I was never bothered by the story, I just wanted to be able to draw cool shit. So I copied styles and even full pages just so that I could learn to draw like a comic book artist.

Now that I'm older I know I'll never be that good and I'll never get into Marval or DC. I've kind of settled on a style I'm kind of happy with? But my childhood dream is NEVER going to be realised. I DO want to draw for a living and now I know that it is possible. Anybody can draw a comic, print it up and sell it at conventions or on line. ANYONE!! Take XKCD for instance... Stick figures!! WTF!! I've been spending the last 15 fucking years of my life fighting against people telling me it's a waste of time while trying to better my art like a dick. All I needed to do was stick figures!

I know that the writing in XKCD carries the art but I still can't sit down and read it because of the art. I will never buy one of their books.

I Would however buy any of Skottie Young's books. The art is fantastic and I would love to be able to draw like that.

I'm going to do a book of pen sketches probably around 30-40 pages. I want to do one a day but I know that will probably not happen.

But I'll give it a try...

PoseBook...

I recently got PoseBook for the iPhone and I have to say it's actually helping with my art. I used it for the first time today and did a few sketches. It really helps when you have a block (which I get a lot!) and gives you something to sketch when time is short. Look for it in the app store. Highly recommended!

Anyway... Here's the sketches I did...

It's been a while...

I've been slacking on the updates to this blog so here's what I've been doing...

I read the beano when I was a kid and have just started to think my kid would like them. But here's my problem, they ain't what they used to be. They used to be ALL comics but these days they're more like magazines than comics. Sure they still have comics but now it has readers letters and fan art pages and games and adverts too. Me no like!

So with this in mind I thought how could I get a comic/book that I could sell and that kids would like?

Fuck it! I'm going to make one!

It's going to have coloring pages, comics, games and an added extra of draw your own comics pages all wrapped up in a book that I hope to do each year. Aprox 100 pages long and great fun for kids aged 5-12.

I've been working on Ideas for comics and coloring pages so far and I think each book will have a theme.

So just to get your fingers itching for this book, here's a coloring page to get you started...
